Visualizing Virginia - Unemployment Rates

Reading the map: This chart uses a line to represent each locality’s monthly unemployment rates between Jan. 2000 and Dec. 2017 and groups the localities by region.

There is a spike associated with the recession in all regions, but the magnitude was greater in rural regions, especially Southside, which not only had some of the highest unemployment rates in the state, but also displayed the largest variation among the member localities. The Northern region had significantly lower unemployment rates than other regions, with the highest rates experienced during the recession still being lower than those of some rural localities today. The regular winter seasonal peaks in a few of the Eastern region localities are a result of the area tourism economy.
