Visualizing Virginia - Population Shares

Reading the map: The size of each box represents the share of the statewide population who lives within that region. Each locality’s share is also represented, although more faintly, within each region’s box.

As a result of urbanization over time, approximately 75 percent of the state’s population is now concentrated in just three of its regions—Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, and Central Virginia. The Northern region alone contains more than one third of the state’s total population.
