Visualizing Virginia - Educational Attainment

Reading the map: Each panel contains four bars representing the level of educational attainment among the locality’s adult population age 25 and older. The top bar represents the percentage having a bachelor’s degree or higher, followed by bars below that show the percentage having some college only, having no more than a high school diploma or its equivalent, and having less than a high school diploma.

Educational attainment reflects not only the educational level of a population but also its age structure. Because the level of educational attainment has increased over time in the state, younger members of a population are more likely to have attained a higher level of education than their older counterparts.
