National Population Projections

At A Glance

UPDATED MAY 2016: These population projections for the nation overall, and for all 50 states (and the District of Columbia), update the 2013 projections, which were the first to be produced using data from the 2010 Census. The projections detail changes between 2020 and 2040 in overall population and in subgroups by age and sex. Comparisons between national and state-level projections show that not all states will experience the anticipated national trends in which the population grows larger and becomes older. Each of these trends has broad implications for planning and policy at both state and national levels.
